Celebrating Confidence, Courage and Progress at Our Summer Concert

In July, pupils from LP Music Tuition gathered for our annual summer music recital at the beautiful Grade II listed Elmslie House in Malvern, and it turned out to be one of the warmest afternoons of the year in more ways than one.

Despite the heat, nothing dampened the enthusiasm of our performers. Over 80 parents, relatives and supporters packed into Elmslie House to watch more than 30 pupils take to the stage, from pianists and singers just weeks into their musical journey through to our most advanced musicians. For one afternoon, the room held every stage of learning at once: first notes, first nerves and first bows, all sharing the same programme.

But for us, these concerts have never really been about playing the right notes. They are about something bigger.

Building confidence through music

As I said in my opening speech, one of the greatest things a musical instrument can give a young person is confidence. It sits right at the heart of our ethos at LP Music Tuition. It is something we build into every one of our singing lessons near Worcester, from the very first lesson, long before anyone is asked to think about a stage.

Standing up to perform in front of more than 80 people takes real courage, especially with 30 fellow pupils sitting to the side, waiting for their own turn. For some, walking onto that stage was a milestone that would once have felt unimaginable.

We have taught children who, in their first few lessons, were too shy to say more than a few words. Over time, we watched them grow comfortable, begin to express themselves through music, and slowly build belief in their own ability. Watching those same pupils walk onto a stage and perform for a room full of people is something genuinely special. That kind of progress is not always something a grade or an exam result can capture. Sometimes the biggest achievement is simply having the confidence to stand up and think, “I can do this.”

Performance without pressure

At LP Music Tuition, no pupil is ever required to perform in concerts or take examinations.

We believe music education should be individual. Some pupils love working towards graded exams. Others simply want to play or sing the music they enjoy. Some arrive desperate to get on stage, while others cannot imagine ever wanting to perform in front of anybody, and there is no pressure to follow one route over the other.

What we find most rewarding is that, as pupils grow in confidence, most choose to take part in our performance opportunities anyway. They do it because they feel ready, not because they have to.

That distinction matters to us. Rather than treating confidence as something a pupil must already have before they perform, we build it gradually: through positive lessons, encouragement, achievable challenges and celebrating progress along the way. By the time concert day arrives, pupils who may once have felt apprehensive are often excited to show their families what they can do.

From beginners to advanced musicians

Our Summer Concert showed exactly what we love about LP Music Tuition. There was no expectation that everybody should be at the same level. Beginners shared the stage with more experienced musicians, and every performance told a different story: weeks of practice, a new skill mastered, nerves overcome, or simply the joy of playing a favourite piece.

It is the same approach behind our piano lessons across Worcestershire: meeting each pupil exactly where they are, rather than measuring everyone against the same yardstick. For a beginner, playing a short piece confidently can matter every bit as much as an advanced pupil tackling something technically demanding. Every pupil had their own reason to feel proud.

One of the loveliest parts of the afternoon was watching our pupils support one another. They were not simply performers waiting for their turn; they were an audience for their fellow musicians too, applauding each other’s achievements and sharing the experience together.

More than music lessons

Of course, we want our pupils to become capable musicians, to develop good technique, musical understanding and a genuine love of music. But we also care about everything that happens alongside that.

Learning an instrument teaches perseverance. It teaches pupils that mistakes are part of learning. It gives them goals to work towards, and the satisfaction of achieving them. And little by little, it can give a child the confidence to do something they once believed they could not.

Our Summer Concert was a wonderful reminder of exactly that. To every pupil who performed: you should be incredibly proud of yourselves. Whether it was your very first performance or one of many, getting onto that stage was an achievement in itself, and the standard throughout the afternoon was fantastic.

A huge thank you to our families for filling Elmslie House and giving every performer such a supportive audience, and to everyone who helped make the afternoon possible. It was hot, it was busy, and it was a wonderful celebration of just how far our pupils have come.
